And how did you end up here? I’ve lived mostly in DC and New York and had a brief 2 year stint in LA which was when I discovered I’m definitely an east coaster!

How long have you been with Protein Bar?
2 weeks. Yea, I’m pretty new.

Biggest Passions?
Food and cooking. I’m really into the healthy stuff and love veganizing traditional recipes.

If you had to describe yourself in one word what would it be?
Sociable. It’s hard to pick just one but I love socializing, spending time with my friends, and making new ones.

A goal you have achieved that you are proud of?
I’ve had a lot of little achievements but if I had one big goal that I have yet to reach, it’s doing a cooking segment on The Today Show. Preferably with Hoda and Kathie Lee because I think those ladies are so much fun!

What’s your personal motto?
Where there’s a will there’s a way. This is something that I definitely live by. I think everyone has the ability to make their dreams a reality.

Something surprising about you?
I was very shy as a kid. No one ever believes me when I tell them this.

What is the scariest thing you have ever done?
Moving to LA. It was kind of on a whim and while I didn’t love it there, I’m sure glad I tried it.

What is the coolest thing about your PB team?
I’m still getting to know everyone but they’ve all been so friendly and welcoming!

If you could eat one PB item forever what would it be?
The southwest salad with tofu.

If you could add one item to the PB menu what would it be?
A veggie burger

If you could manage a Protein Bar anywhere in the world where would it be?
Australia just because I’m dying to go there some day.

And how did you end up here?
Originally from suburban Downers Grove, IL, I worked seasonally for a bit in the near-wilderness of Alaska and the not-quite-rural upper Rockies of Colorado, finally graduating into the fully-urban life in Chicago when I needed something new.

How long have you been with Protein Bar?
My relationship with PB began, very fittingly, just before Valentine’s Day of last year, and our mutual passion for one another has only grown over the last fourteen months. We are still as deeply in love as we were the day I first responded to that lovelorn Craigslist ad.

Biggest Passions?
I am passionate (roughly in order of magnitude) about the following: all things musical; the quest for complete world knowledge and the meaning of life; outdoor activities in the vain of hiking, cycling, snowboarding, and all sports water-related; all things linguistic; hydration; the riding of roller coasters; the wearing of colorful headbands; and peanut butter.

If you had to describe yourself in one word what would it be?
Loopy

A goal you have achieved that you are proud of?
Becoming an Assistant Manager at Protein Bar! And I’m not just saying that.

What’s your personal motto?
“Do what feels good.” In a world of infinite variables, the one thing we have control over is ourselves. If you don’t actively make choices that make you happy, you’re doing it all wrong.

Do you have any unique talents?
I am great at Monday-Wednesday difficulty crossword puzzles, I do a decent Kermit the Frog impression, and I am also what some would call a ‘pianist’ or ‘songwriter.’

Something surprising about you? A few months before applying at Protein Bar, I came within days of moving to North Dakota to drive fuel tankers in the booming town of Williston, only to have a last minute panic and not go through with it (fortunately, I might say, for Protein Bar).

What is the scariest thing you have ever done?
Probably the anecdote from above, considering that after bailing on that plan, I had no money, no job, and no idea what I was going to do instead. Although a close second for this answer is the time I wagered my eyebrows over a game of Scrabble.

What is the coolest thing about your PB team?
Everybody is so passionate. It’s awesome to see how everyone’s individual passions from their own lives carry over into the context of work. It creates this sort of feedback loop where everyone wants to do their their best at work, and that motivation carries over into your personal life, and what you do in your personal life positively affects your work, which affects your personal life, and so on and so on.

If you could eat one PB item forever what would it be?
One El of an Oatmeal with bananas, raspberries, and two scoops of peanut butter. This is referred to as Joe’s Oatmeal, or more commonly, ‘Joatmeal.’

If you could add one item to the PB menu what would it be?
Hear me out on this: A drink with strawberries, bananas, and blueberries. We could call it the ‘Star Spangled Nanner”

If you could manage a Protein Bar anywhere in the world where would it be?
Please, please, oh pleeeease open a store in Denver for me! I need some mountain air in my lungs! (Note: I’ll go to Seattle, too.)

Joe’s LOVE List

Word—To say: Ostensibly. To hear: Rigmarole. For it’s impact on the English language: Unreal.
Magazine—Pythagoras
Musician—This is an ever-changing position that is currently held by Chicago’s own Andrew Bird.
TV Show—Community
Movie—Standby answer: Shawshank Redemption. But if I’m trying to be cool and avant-garde I’ll say Synecdoche, New York.
Website—Wikipedia!
Place in the world—Outside of doors, and inside my mind.
Way to spend your Saturday mornings—Reading or maybe doing a crossword puzzle.
Restaurant—There’s a breakfast place in my hometown that I’ll never stop loving. Moondance Diner, you make life worth living.
Way to work out—A bike ride? A hike? A climb at the gym? I’ll take them all.
Way to celebrate—A peanut butter milkshake from Oberweis.

The Detroit area. I moved to New York City after graduating from Michigan State University. After living in a closet (they call that an apartment in NYC) and eating ramen for two years, I move to Chicago to be closer to my sister. Upon moving to Chicago I started working at HomeMade Pizza. This is where I met some great people, I currently work with today.

How long have you been with Protein Bar?
I began my journey with Protein Bar at the beginning of this year.

Biggest Passions?
My biggest passions revolve about my choice to be vegan. I’m very passionate about a healthy lifestyle, treating all living things equally, enjoying the outdoors and keeping it beautiful long after I’m gone.

If you had to describe yourself in one word what would it be?
Perceptive

A goal you have achieved that you are proud of?
Marrying my wife would have to by my greatest achievement. She is so beautiful, intelligent, funny, and caring; I thought I didn’t have a chance.

What’s your personal motto?
Treat others as you would like to be treated

Do you have any unique talents?
Not really… I’m a pretty simple kind of guy.

Something surprising about you?
Reality TV drives me crazy. I wise DM once told me about a German saying, “Schadenfreude”, a German word used to describes people’s delight and entertainment at the failings and problems of others

What is the scariest thing you have ever done?
Scuba dive off the coast of Australia during box jelly fish season. Box jelly fish are the world’s most venomous creature… Bring on the Great White!

What is the coolest thing about your PB team?
We all have the same goal – Happy people serving healthy food

If you could eat one PB item forever what would it be?
Pier-Nut Butter & Jelly (Soy Protein, Almond Milk, No Agave, Add Banana) – it’s so good! Watch out for the seeds in your teeth!

If you could add one item to the PB menu what would it be?
Additional meat substitutes

If you could manage a Protein Bar anywhere in the world where would it be?
Kauai, HI – the most beautiful place on earth!

Scott’s LOVE List

Word—Awesome
Magazine—Do magazines still exist?
Musician—The music I listen to depends on my activity. If I’m running down Lakeshore Drive, I like up-beat artists like Pitbull. Hanging outside on a sunny day while having a beer, I’ll go for some Lumineers.
TV Show—Friday Night Lights on Netflix. Once you watch an episode It’s like a potato chip, you can’t just have one.
Movie—Rudy – I love when that little guys makes the tackle at the end.
Website—Weather.com
Place in the world—Kauai, HI
Way to spend your Saturday mornings—Healthy breakfast, long run down lakeshore and some quality time with the wife and dog.
Restaurant—Protein Bar, of course!
Way to work out—Long runs, weight training, and walking from store to store
Way to celebrate—Grillin’ some veggies, having some drinks, on a warm sunny day with friends and family.

Consider this your spring break – refreshing citrus with a kiss of tart cherry and vanilla protein – perfect for lunches on the patio!

More than just a spring fling – add a snack size Cherry Limeade to any of our menu items for just $2.00

Did we mention there’s only 100 calories (in 20oz) and 60 calories (in 12oz) making this the perfect (guilt-free) midday snack, post-workout treat OR on-the-go breakfast

Super powered, super fruits – cherries are packed with antioxidants, and rich in vitamins C, E, AND potassium

Make it vegan! Order your limeade with soy protein for a vegan sweet treat

Here at Protein Bar we’re always looking for new, innovative ways to get our SWEAT on! Variety is essential for an effective exercise routine – so we’re excited to share a new class from our pals at Barre Bee Fit!

BBF recently launched their INNER DIVAS Dance Series, a monthly class with instructor April Shipp. Each month, April teaches a 90-minute dance class to a song by a different “diva” – incorporating her own choreography inspired by the official music videos. She has taught Beyonce’s “Run the World (Girls)” and Britney’s “I’m a Slave 4 U”, and this month will be going old school diva with Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation”. The Inner Divas classes are not just a great workout, but a genuinely fun time, and an opportunity to acquire some serious moves to show off on the dance floor!

The next session is Saturday, April 20th — sign up is available via Barre Bee Fit under “Events”.
